The duration and title of this piece reference the year 1934. On 12 February of that year, antifascist Social Democrats in Austria rose against repression by the country's fascist government. In this piece, the composer's late grandmother narrates some of her childhood memories of growing up in a Social Democratic household, about her father Hermann Wurmbrand, the composer's great-grandfather, being imprisoned as a consequence of his active role in the 1934 uprising, and about how the son-in-law of composer Anton Webern (Webern being a neighbour of the family) gave the great-grandfather a job after he came out of prison. Another one of her memories in the piece is about how the shop of a Jewish lady was devastated by the Nazis after the Anschluss in 1938.
The piece opens with the composer reading his great-grandfather's obituary. The drone sounds in the piece are generated from a field recording made by the composer at Karl Marx Court in Vienna in February 2013. This huge council tenancy was one of the places where some of the most intense firefights between the insurgents and the government forces took place in February 1934. Hermann Wurmbrand was among those who handed out weapons at Karl Marx Court. A processed photograph of Karl Marx Court forms the cover image for this album.
