One of my main concerns as an audio artist is to change listeners’ perceptions of everyday sounds, to enable them to find “musical” structures in apparently non-musical sounds. The sound of our own feet when walking is a perfect example of an everyday sound, a sound that is so familiar that we hardly ever pay any attention to it. In “Sound Walk”, I have tried to first make the listener aware of this sound at all and then to make it sound unfamiliar and fresh in an aesthetically interesting way while maintaining its recognisable characteristics. I did this by recording a one-minute sequence of myself walking along the corridors in the basement of my house. Copies of this sequence were then arranged on 8 tracks, with the tracks assigned to different positions in the stereo field. Each track starts 15 seconds after the previous one. The idea was to overlay all 8 tracks in the section between 1’45’’ and 2’00’’, therefore the tracks that set in earlier had to be looped. The final section between 2’00’’ and 2’45’’ is structured by the successive ending of the looped sections. Apart from looping and editing, no copy of the original sequence was processed in any way, since the different resonant characeristics of the rooms in my basement provided enough differences in pitch and texture to highlight the musical potential of walking feet.
